ABOUT US

The Soul Surchers, Inc. organization was established in 2010, by single father, ex Professional Athlete, and gifted musician Sidney Harris out of concern for the long-term impact of school budget cuts on the overall development and well-being of youth.  In 2011, the Soul Surchers organization was formally established as a nonprofit organization.  It is our goal to implement the next phase of the Soul Surchers program by 08/01/21 which will include the Learning Center and Health & Wellness programs.

ā€œHigh Student Achievementā€ and ā€œExcellenceā€ is what the Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) is widely known and respected for by parents and students alike.  However, according to (FCPS) School Superintendent Jack Dale, the recent budget cuts will have long-term and far-reaching impact on their ability to maintain high student achievement and excellence standards.  Some of the budget cuts for Fiscal Year 2011 included:  the elimination of freshman sports, winter cheerleading, indoor track and a 50 percent cut in swim and dive team practice.  In addition athletic participation fees were increased to ($100 per student per Virginia High School League sport).  Superintendent further stated that without sufficient resources to support students and school staff many (FCPS) programs which parents and students have come to expect will unfortunately continue to be eliminated.

The first phase of our program has been implemented in Fairfax County Virginia, which is located approximately 17 miles from Washington, D.C. Fairfax County Va. is considered “One of the great economic success stories of our time,” with about 80 percent of the households in the county above the national household median income.  However, there are many signs of distress in middleclass communities especially in a weak economy.  We believe that middleclass families are the backbone of our society, thus we felt it was important to develop programs that would not only enrich the lives of the youth participating in our programs but, support these families through these hard economic times.
